Shaw Reel Cinema Club Presents a folk horror double bill: The Wicker Man and Kill List

Shaw Reel Cinema Club proudly presents a May Day folk horror double bill of The Wicker Man and Kill List at Pollokshaws Burgh Hall.

The program begins with Robin Hardy’s 1973 classic The Wicker Man. Grumpy puritan Sergeant Neil Howie (Edward Woodward) of the West Highland Constabulary is summoned to the remote Scottish island of Summersisle in search of a missing girl, only to find that the eccentric pagan locals (led by Lord Summersisle, played by Christopher Lee) claim she never existed. Has he been summoned to the island for other reasons? Will Howie find the missing girl, and will he keep his appointment with the wicker man? One of the most revered cult horror films in cinematic history and a linchpin of the “folk horror” genre, The Wicker Man features an incredible folk soundtrack, an atmosphere that carefully balances the sinister and the absurd, an abundance of eccentric behaviour, and, of course, an unforgettable ending.

The Wicker Man is followed by Ben Wheatley's gritty 2011 crime horror Kill List. Jay (Neil Maskell), a traumatized and out-of-work soldier with money troubles, takes on a sinister assignment with his friend and colleague Gal (Michael Smiley). Things turn dark very quickly as they work through a kill list at the behest of an eerie client. Blending elements of gritty kitchen sink drama with crime thriller and occult horror, Kill List is disturbing, tense, and brutal with an oppressive atmosphere that’s sustained right up to its shocking ending.

Doors are at 7.30pm, followed by a live performance on the Wurlitzer cinema organ. The Wicker Man begins at 8pm, and Kill List begins at approximately 9.30pm. The bar will remain open through the evening.
